New Highway Code: Why Choosing an NCC Is the Safer Option

Indice

Since December 14, 2024, the new Highway Code has been in force. The update provides for greater strictness and resulting administrative and criminal penalties. The topics addressed are: abandonment of animals, drunk driving, newly licensed drivers, speeding, the use of scooters, and driving under the influence of drugs.

Penalties for those who drive using a smartphone

Anyone who uses a smartphone while driving receives an automatic one‑week suspension of their driver’s license. The fine ranges from 250 to 1000 euros. The penalty reaches 1400 euros and suspension up to 3 months if the driver is a repeat offender.

Rules for newly licensed drivers

No alcohol level is tolerated for the first 3 years of holding a license. It is forbidden to drive supercars for 3 years.

Speeding

Penalties reach a maximum of 694 euros for those who exceed the speed limit by 10 km/h and no more than 40 km/h. In the city, the fine starts from a minimum of 220 euros up to 880 euros, with a one‑month license suspension.

Scooters

With the new Highway Code, it is necessary to insure the two‑wheeled vehicle. However, in addition to mandatory insurance, the vehicle must be registered and a helmet must be worn — even by adults.

Abandonment of animals

Anyone who commits this serious crime may face revocation or suspension of their driver’s license for up to one year. Those who abandon an animal and cause an accident as a result may risk up to 7 years in prison..

Driving under the influence of alcohol

A heavy blow for those who get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Penalties depend on the detected blood alcohol level. In any case, anyone found driving with a level equal to or greater than 0.50 will have 10 points deducted from their license. Repeat offenders must have an alcohol‑lock device in the car.

Blood alcohol level 0.5 to 0.8 Blood alcohol level 0.8 to 1.5 Blood alcohol level above 1.5
from 573 to 2170 euros fine from 800 to 3200 euros fine from 1500 to 6000 euros fine
License suspension from 3 to 6 months Arrest up to 6 months and license suspension from 6 months to 1 year Arrest from 6 months to 1 year and license suspension from 1 to 2 years

Driving under the influence of drugs

Saliva tests carried out by law enforcement will be enough to determine whether the driver is under the influence of drugs. In fact, no medical professional will be required on site. Once the presence of substances in the body is detected at the time of the check, the immediate revocation of the license for 3 years is triggered. After the 3 years, a new license must be obtained. A monetary fine ranging from 1500 to 6000 euros and arrest from 3 months to one year is expected.
