History
The Putignano Carnival begins on December 26 and ends on March 4. Its roots date back to the year 1394. On December 26, 1394, the farmers of Putignano left their work in the fields to joyfully join the procession accompanying the relics of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, transferred from Monopoli to Putignano. From that moment, the “Propaggini Festival” was born, marking the beginning of the Putignano Carnival.
From the mid-1900s, the first allegorical floats began to appear. In the 1950s, papier-mâché made its debut and has remained the main technique to this day. The papier-mâché masters create true works of art.

The Farinella Mask
Farinella is the official mask of Putignano. According to legend, Farinella was the town’s baker. He saved Putignano from a Saracen attack thanks to a clever plan. Farinella staged a fake epidemic among the townspeople, who covered themselves with farinella (a flour made from chickpeas and barley), simulating pustules caused by an unknown disease. Fearing contagion, the Saracens decided to retreat, leaving the town unharmed.
The Farinella mask appears as a mix between Harlequin and a jester, with a red nose and a three-pointed hat with little bells.
